Fact: In spite of their large size, elephants
don't make much noise when walking. The soles of their feet are cushioned with a
fatty tissue, so it softens the impact of each step, and enables the animal to move
quietly. Since elephants walk on their tip toes, the fatty tissue also serves as
a cushion to the heel of their feet. |
Fact: Elephants consume up to 5% of their
body weight every day, and only digest about 40% of what they eat. Elephants are
herbivores (meaning they do not eat meat) and feed on leaves, bark from trees, and
even grasses. Horse, deer, and pandas are examples of other herbivores. |
Fact: The head of an elephant family is called
matriarch. She can live as long as 60 years (beyond her breeding age) and passes
along her experience and knowledge to the younger females in the herd. |
