Fact: Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos), also known as brown bears, are one of North America's biggest land mammals. Grizzly bears derive their name from the grizzled appearance of their light-tipped brown fur. The colors can range from light to very dark shades of brown, and can even give the appearance of being streaked with gray. Some scientists think that polar bears are descended from light brown grizzlies. Source: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Fact: When brown bears live and hunt in mountainous regions where forests and vegetation are still relatively untouched by man's influence, they are referred to as grizzlies. Brown bears are commonly called brown bears in the more coastal regions, where a diet rich in fish and sea life make them larger and fatter than their more grizzled counterparts.
